As stated in the Suquamish Tribe’s FY99 Action Plan, the environmental protection goal for the Port Madison Indian Reservation is:
To protect and restore the natural environment of the Port Madison Indian Reservation for purposes of protecting treaty-reserved resources and public health.
One step toward achieving that goal is to consider the wetlands within the Port Madison Indian Reservation and work toward their protection. Our method has been a three-part approach:
1. Start with the largest wetland complex on the reservation - Doe-Kag-Wats -
and characterize the biology and hydrology within the wetland and the watershed so we
know what’s there to begin with. That will provide a baseline to compare for degradation.
Techniques developed at Doe-Kag-Wats should be usable at the other reservation wetlands.
2. Develop a framework for a management plan that can be used for the other wetlands.
3. Develop a plan to eradicate invasive species before large-scale biological damage is done.
