MapInfo Pro 10.0 Features and Opinion from SGSI
MapInfo Professional 10.0
New features & SGSI's perspective

Overview

MapInfo Professional 10.0 is the latest revision of this mature GIS from Pitney Bowes Software (formerly MapInfo Corp).   With a "first ship" date in June 2009, v10.0 maintains the company's decade-long tradition of annual software upgrades.

Compared to other GIS software, MapInfo Pro is distinguished by its:
- Microsoft Windows "look-and-feel" including full support for Windows 7 O/S and MS Office 2007;
- Tightly-integrated set of viewing, editing, mapping & analytic tools;
- Unparalleled "what-if" analysis features; and
- Excellent inter-connectivity with Oracle, Access, SQL Server and other industry-standard databases.

New in Version 10.0

Layered PDF output

The free version of Acrobat Reader has a built-in ability to turn PDF layers "On" and "Off".  Map-based PDF's aren't automatically structured into layers, however.  To create layered PDFs, the map software (not the Adobe software) must create the PDF's in a particular way:  one that preserves map layers as PDF layers.  MapInfo Professional v10.0 does this.

  • Can't afford Adobe Acrobat or PDF Writer?  With v10, a paid license to Acrobat is not required.

  • Already distributing maps in PDF form?  With v10, you probably can create fewer versions.   E.g. create one PDF with many layers, then let different departments turn map layers "On" as needed.

"Always-On" Layer Control

Floating window

The v9.5 Layer Control is a dialog box you must put away before continuing your work. In v10, the Layer Control is a floating and dockable window.  Leave it open throughout your session, if you choose.

Style swatches

The v10 Layer Control displays an icon to illustrate each layer's current color, line style or other style setting.

Modify many layers at once

At v10, select multiple layers then synchronize their color or other settings as a group.

"Always-on" layer control may be docked or floating, "on" or "off". (Click for larger image...)

Updated & expanded Tool Buttons

For v10, PBS has modernized the overall look and feel of dialog boxes, tool buttons, and the general user interface.

Tool bars can dock to left, right, top or bottom.

Data Access

Office 2007

Directly open Access 2007 and Excel 2007 files, without ODBC or translation.

For Access 2007, as was the case for Access 2000 and Access 97, MapInfo Pro v10 offers write-access as well as the ability to create new tables, add fields, and redefine fields.

SQL Server 2008

Expanded support for the two spatial data types offered in SQL Server 2008.

PostGIS

Comprehensive read and write access to PostGIS spatial data.  PostGIS is open-source software that adds spatial capability to the PostgreSQL database, resulting in a fully open-source spatial database option.

MapInfo Pro v10 offers direct native access to PostGIS, using ODBC, without the need for any middleware.
