MapInfo Pro 11.0 Features and Opinion from SGSI
  MapInfo Professional 11.0
New features & SGSI's perspective

  Overview

MapInfo Professional 11.0, first shipped in June 2011, continues the company's decade+ tradition of annual software upgrades.

The new revision includes a solid set of enhancements focused on improvements in the "browser" or "spreadsheet" window of data tables.

The core product retains its traditional strengths, when compared to other commercial GIS workstation software.  E.g.:

  • Microsoft Windows "look-and-feel" including full support for Windows 7 O/S and native access (not just ODBC) to MS Office 2000-to-2010;

  • Tightly-integrated tools to edit and analyze (not simply "view") data;

  • Unparalleled "what-if" analysis features; and

  • Best-of-breed inter-connectivity with Oracle, MS Access, SQL Server and other industry-standard databases.

New in Version 11.0

Easier-to-read data windows

In MapInfo Pro 11.0:  Alternating rows have alternating background row color.  Yes, this is configurable.

In MapInfo Pro 10.5 (old):

More data; less scrolling

In MapInfo Pro 11.0:  Deleted records shrink out of view

In MapInfo Pro 10.5:  Deleted records still display, showing as grey

Click-drag to select multiple rows

In MapInfo Pro 11.0:  Click-drag with mouse to efficiently select and highlight many data records in a one swoop.

In MapInfo Pro. 10.5:  Click, then shift-click one-row-at-a-time to laboriously select groups of rows.

Auto-fit column width to match data values

In MapInfo Pro 11.0:  Column widths auto-size to be as wide as necessary, but no wider.

In MapInfo Pro 10.5:  Default column width was based on column definitions, not data values.  If column is defined as 50 characters wide, it displays as 50 characters wide, even if data values are narrower.

  Data window:  Quick-access menu to sort or change text style

Right-click in data column to access shortcut menu:

Font size too small or boring?  Change it!

Sort without running a query:

Multi-line text:  In Data windows and as map labels

Quick how-to:

  • Display data in a Browser window;

  • Click in a cell to switch to edit mode

  • Position cursor in cell , the press Ctrl-Enter (not Shift-Enter) to insert a line-feed character.

The two-line label displays in the Browser:

If it is 2-line in the data window, it is 2-lines on the map!

Enhanced memory for Windows 7 64-bit O/S

MapInfo v11.0 detects and uses up to 4 gB of RAM, when running under Windows 7, 64-bit edition.  This greatly increases its abilities for memory intensive operations such as:

  • Object > Clean, Object > Split and similar object processing;

  • Grid & raster data loading; and

  • Generating layered PDF output.

Note:  This is not (yet) a pure 64-bit implementation of MapInfo Professional.

Misc enhancements

Export full coordinate precision

In MapInfo v11.0:  Export coordinate values (exposed via CentroidX() ), and obtain complete longitude & latitude coordinate values.

In MapInfo v10.5:  Exported coordinates were rounded, absent taking special steps.

Multiple Undo/Redo's in Browser window cells

In MapInfo v11.0, you may undo multiple operations by repeatedly selecting Edit > Undo from the menu or by pressing [Ctrl-Z].  To redo after an undo, press [Ctrl Y].

Optional:  Premium Online web service package

For users with current Support plans, the BING Aerial and Hybrid tile map layers continue to be included at no extra cost.  This was introduced with MapInfo v10.5 and has not changed.

For an annual added cost of $495/license, Revision 11 offers premium online functions as follows:

BING street map tiles
Layer-in detailed BING street maps, not simply the aerial or hybrid aerial maps.  BING street maps are an online raster tile service and do not allow views of underlying street address ranges or street line shape nodes.

BING "Move Map"
Re-center a map window on a specific street address or landmark, worldwide.

OpenStreetMap street map tiles
For some areas of the world, and even in parts of the USA, the open source OpenStreetMap project has the best street maps.  With the Premium service option, you may layer in these maps as raster tiles, too.
