MapInfo Pro 8.0 Features and Opinion from SGSI
MapInfo Professional 8.0
New features & SGSI's perspective

Overview

MapInfo Pro 8.0 shipped on schedule in June 2005, only 9 months after the release of Rev. 7.8.   A maintenance release/patch, Rev. 8.01 was released in November.

This is the 20th revision of MapInfo Corp's successful and mature mapping & spatial analysis workbench for Windows.

The new features are refinements of existing features, rather than revolutionary changes, and are in direct response to user requests.

New in Revision 8.0

Mapping & spatial analysis:

  • Support for supremely-complex shapes:  Display and process maps where *each* region or line has more than 100 million nodes.  This is a 100x increase in complexity.
    Why?
Handle, for example, outrageously-detailed land contours, wireless RF signal coverage, and the most detailed shorelines.

  • Distance calculator:  Distance Calculator MBX now calculates the shortest straight line distance to the nearest shoreline, zip code or other region.
    Why?
Quickly assign customers or events to the nearest zip code, precinct, school catchment zone, trade area, or other territory.

  • Legend format options:  Improved options to manipulate and format map legends, including control of  legend size and column alignment.
    Why?
    Better looking maps.

"We had quite a bit of oil on the beach from the recent spill. Used MapInfo to illustrate that, and to map it. I couldn't take my GPS out there, so I gave one of the biologists a map, and he drew the areas on that. I brought the map back, scanned it, geo-referenced it in MapInfo, and on-screen digitized his polygons. All under severe time pressure, last night. Hurray for MapInfo!"  Details ...(PDF)

Better data access & interoperability:

  • AutoDesk formats:  Iimport the latest DWG/DXF (2004 format) and DGN (v8.0) data formats.
    Why?
Quick, easy data interchange with CAD and AM/FM systems.

  • Open GIS (OGC) web servers:  Out-of-the-box support for WMS, WFS and now GML v2.1 and OSGB GML 2 servers, too.
    Why?
Save money & time by using freely-available aerial & other maps on public TerraServer, GlobeXplorer, &  USGS servers.

  • Excel "one click" access:  New option to open, optimize, & convert XLS worksheets to editable form in a single step.
    Why?
Fewer 'clicks' to get to editable and re-structurable data tables.

  • GRID:  Directly open & display Shapefile 3D and ESRI Grid format (both binary and ascii).
    Why?
Better, faster use of "foreign" data.  Note:  No translation required.

  • TIFF & GIF:  Save window contents as TIFF and GIF format, in addition to the previous BMP, JPEG, WMF and other formats.
    Why?
Convenient integration of MapInfo Pro output with web page content, PhotoShop and other graphics.

  • Save MapInfo Pro Workspaces in the new comprehensive MapXtreme 2004 MWS format.
    Why?
Move map projects easily between and among MapInfo Corp desktop and server tools.

Misc

  • Larger query dialog boxes.
    Why?
More room for complex criteria and column lists with less scrolling..

MapInfo Pro 8.0 (larger)

MapInfo Pro 7.8 (smaller)

  • XP-certified:  Still the only "logo-certified" GIS for XP Pro & XP Home; still compatible with Windows 2000, Windows NT 4 and, even, Windows 98 SE.  (Certification renewed with v. 8.0)

Before ordering, consider your options:

  • Do you need a new full desktop license, or an upgrade?   If upgrading, do you have your serial number?

  • Do you only want to buy MapInfo Pro, or do you want to add annual phone Technical Support?

  • Do you want a price that includes "Software Upgrade Maintenance":  e.g, includes all software upgrades shipped automatically for a 1, 2, or 3 year period.  This is substantially cheaper than buying annual one-time upgrades.

All prices listed here are in US$, for a single user license,  and are subject to change.   We must have your serial number to process an upgrade order.  Volume discounts may apply if you have 3+ individual licenses.  Please call SGSI at 206-224-0800 for volume license options.
