MapX Mobile Mapping for PocketPC from SGSI
MapX Mobile

Overview
MapX Mobile is a full-featured GIS map component for iPAQTM, JornadaTM, and other PocketPCTM computers. PocketPCTM-based devices are shirt-pocket sized, making them ideal for jobs where laptops are too big.

Highlights

  • A fully programmable ActiveXTM control for developers, offering the same general object model as MapXTM and MapXtremeTM.

  • Accesses maps & data tables stored locally on the PocketPC. Wireless links are supported, but not required (unlike MapXtendTM).

  • Rich object model includes data access (ADO), raster/vector map layers, auto-labeling, thematic mapping, object editing (incl. split, buffer, etc), & support for map projections. Not simply a display engine.

  • Perfect for situations where workers download base maps in the office at start of work, then upload field entries at end of shift.

  • Uses industry-standard ActiveSyncTM to synchronize field entries with centralized databases, including any MapInfo "TAB" file changes.

  • Integrates with GPS devices (sample code included).

  • Compatibility: Pocket PCTM 2000 or 2002 with StrongArmTM Processor; 128mb RAM minimum.

Applications

  • Field service support for technician & engineers:
As part of an Asset Management System, MapX Mobile (MXM) can display multi-layered maps illustrating equipment locations. MXM's database links would allow the tech to drilldown to data table details, schematics, etc. immediately without leaving the tower, manhole, plant, or tunnel. Data tables and maps could be updated on-the-spot, then replicated to system servers on return to the office.

  • Pest, weed, and/or disease control for farmers, agricultural inspectors, and health workers:
Using MapX Mobile (MXM)'s unique map and database editing features, field worker can map and enter other descriptors about agricultural pests, noxious weeds, and insect infestations. MXM-equipped iPAQs are small enough to be packed into remote off-road sites, where laptops would be impractical.

  • Sales force automation for traveling sales staff:
MXM can link with CRM and other sales automation tools to, for example, display all nearby prospects symbolized based on sales potential or date of most recent visit. Standard Mapinfo "TAB"-format census and zip code boundaries can be downloaded at the office for the territory, then shaded based on demographics or corporate data. On return to the office, the day's customer contact results and sales orders can be uploaded using ActiveSync.

  • Police crime prevention & analysis: As the core of a mobile Crime Information System, MapX Mobile (MXM) could display user-selectable map layers of crime incidents, suspect & criminal residences, known drug houses, & other points of interest. Officers would update historical data daily from the master RDBMS, using industry-standard ActiveSync interface. At the end of a shift, the officer's incident reports, including new point locations, would be uploaded and merged with the RDBMS. MXM's PocketPC platform is small enough to be practical for bicycle, horse, and on-foot officers--not just those in patrol cars.

  • Other applications include MXM systems for insurance claims teams, government building inspectors, social services caseworkers, and delivery service personnel.
